The New York Connection: Mays, Stamm, Goldsby, Dekker @ Oper Bonn | Bonn | Nordrhein-Westfalen | Germany

This is a dream gig for me: Two of my old friends from New York are performing this week with the WDR Big Band, and I had the chance to grab them for this quartet gig at the beautiful, historic Bonn Opera.

I’ve known Bill Mays since he moved to new in the late ’80s. We played and recorded quite a bit during that time, including some great albums like Tale Of The Fingers (check out the bass/piano duet that he wrote for me: “Three Short Stories For Contrabass and Piano”), and Bill’s projects, An Ellington Affair, and The Nutcracker Suite.

I played with Marvin Stamm on various big band projects in New York, like the albums with The American Jazz Orchestra.

Hans Dekker, my rhythm section partner in the WDR Big Band, is of course one of my favorite drummers of all time. I’m looking forward to the chemistry between these great musicians, and sharing our music with you at the Bonn Opera.
